Monstera deliciosa – Everything you need to know (and more)

It’s a Monstera. The extra A stands for attractive because that’s what Monstera deliciosa is all about. It is a stylish tropical indoor plant that is a statement piece all by itself. In other words, it can steal attention and become the center of attraction at every house party that you throw. Now, if you are okay with that (who wouldn’t be?), you might want to learn everything there is to know about this wonderful ornamental plant. It will help you take the best care of it and watch it grow into your heart.

BONUS – It has spectacular air-purifying properties!

So, without further ado, let’s get straight to growth and care advice!

How to grow – Give it a lot of space!

Monstera is known for its giant leaves and ability to keep growing wildly. To encourage this, you must provide a lot of space and a large pot. Here are a few expert tips that you should keep in mind:

  • Only use well-draining peat-based soil.
  • Provide a moss stick so that its aerial roots find a way to climb and thrive.
  • Change the pot once every two years (on average). Transfer your Monstera into a larger, deeper pot. This will ensure that it always has enough space to grow.
  • If you see dust on the large, perforated leaves, you can wipe them clean with water and just 1 drop of mild dishwashing solution. Do not use too much.

Note – If you don’t fancy aerial roots climbing onto a moss stick, you can tuck them into the soil. Trimming them is an option too but we recommend the tucking process.

Light requirements – It loves the sun but not too much

Monstera, as we all know, is an indoor plant. But, it is not exactly shade-loving. It likes bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can actually harm the plant, causing its leaves to turn yellow. During the winter, however, you can let it bask in the morning sun.

It is important to note here that even though the plant can live in dark rooms, its leaves will turn dark green, which is not the natural shade. Anything that strays from the natural is an anomaly and stresses the plant out. So, keep it near a window that gets enough indirect sunlight. Don’t isolate it in darkness.

Water requirements – It doesn’t get too thirsty!

This lovely plant is a fan of light watering. This means that you only need to water it when the soil dries on top. There are a few more things to remember in this regard. They are as follows:

  • Water once in a week or two weeks depending on the soil
  • You can mist the leaves once in a while (especially in winters)
  • Normal humidity is just fine through the year but during winters, you may want to use a humidifier to increase the humidity
  • Overwatering the plant will cause its leaves to turn yellow and its stems to blacken
  • Underwatering results in wilting and brown spots

Just as is the case with us humans, too much pampering may not go down well with your Monstera. Give it just as much love as it needs and it will flourish.

Pet safety – We have sad news

It breaks our heart to say this but Monstera is not a pet-friendly plant. Its leaves can be toxic when ingested. So, if you have pets, you may have to look for other indoor plants instead. (We are sorry!)
